What is left to talk about? Political discourse in times of fragmentation and polarisation in society

Date:

Friday, 3 May 2024, 14:00-17:15

Saturday, 4 May: 09.30-12.45

Location: University of Applied Sciences Burgenland, Campus 1, Eisenstadt

What can we still talk to each other about - without ending up in a confrontation in a short space of time? In liberal democracies, we are increasingly confronted with polarisation in public discourse. Instead of talking to each other, we talk about each other. Positions are presented in a pointed, abbreviated and exaggerated manner and the chance of compromise is diminishing. What impact does this situation have on socio-political discourse? And what does this mean for elections and election campaigns - especially for the upcoming European Parliament elections? We will be discussing these and other questions at this year's European Business Forum on the eve of the 2024 EU elections.

With our annual congress, we want to make the diversity of our member universities visible and show how universities of applied sciences are finding new ways and solutions to meet the current challenges of our society and enable the transformation to a more sustainable world.

The event is an ideal opportunity to network with interested participants from different disciplines on the topic of sustainability at universities and to discuss and further develop new approaches to sustainability issues in the higher education sector together.

In Austria alone, around 1000 people are diagnosed with leukaemia every year, including some children. Many are waiting for a so-called stem cell donation as their last hope for survival! The chance of finding a 100% suitable donor is between 1:500,000 and several million worldwide. So it is very low. And: Unfortunately, only around 3% of all Austrians are typed!

The more people who are typed, i.e. registered as donors, the greater the chance that a suitable donor can be found if the need arises.

In many places, it is no longer really dark at night - the countless light sources in cities are shining ever brighter. Researchers refer to this form of environmental pollution as ‘light pollution’. This not only has a negative impact on the visibility of the stars, but above all on flora and fauna as well as human health. The phenomenon is constantly on the increase and is not just an urban issue, but is penetrating ever further into dark regions and protected natural areas. The lecture will discuss why light pollution is an urgent issue, what its consequences are, what the global and national situation is and what measures everyone can take to curb it.
