History

30 years of FH Burgenland

In the academic year 2023/24, the FH Burgenland celebrated its 30th anniversary.

1993 - A founding team seals the start of the FH in Burgenland. The two locations Eisenstadt and Pinkafeld were chosen. The degree programmes International Economic Relations and Building Technology and Management are the first FH degree programmes in Austria. The sponsor is a non-profit association.

1995 - Already 90 students study in Eisenstadt. At the same time, 45 students are studying in Pinkafeld, and this year they are allowed to move into a new building.

1997 - In June the first 32 graduates of the diploma programme International Economic Relations celebrate their graduation.

1999 - The ground-breaking ceremony for the Technology Centre South, which still houses the laboratory of the FH Burgenland, takes place in Pinkafeld. This laid the foundation for the extremely successful research activities of the next few years.

2003 - In September the new study centre in Eisenstadt is ceremoniously opened. The building complex designed by architect Riepl even receives the Architecture Prize of the Province of Burgenland in 2004. The campus has a usable area of over 10,000 m2 and offers the best possible conditions for students.

2004 - Three-year Bachelor's degree programmes and two-year Master's degree programmes now also start in Burgenland in the course of the Bologna Process. From now on, it is also possible to study part-time at the FH Burgenland.

2006 - The number of graduates breaks the 1,000 mark and makes it clear: the FH Burgenland has come to stay. The range of courses on offer is constantly being expanded.

2012/2013 - In addition to a new management, the newly elected FH College also begins its work. The FH Burgenland degree programmes may now officially call themselves FH Burgenland, and the core competence areas become departments. A new brand identity with a new logo and the claim "FH Burgenland. Bringing something special together." is intended as an incentive for all those involved in the University of Applied Sciences. The group of companies also grows to include the FH subsidiaries Forschung Burgenland, AIM - Austrian Institute of Management and Akademie Burgenland.

2014 - The Pinkafeld research location breaks new ground with the opening of the Energetikum. This is designed as a so-called "Living Lab", which means that research is carried out while the building is actually used in everyday life.

2014 - Pioneering spirit remains a strength of Burgenland's largest university. Together with international partner universities, it is now possible to take a PhD programme at FH Burgenland.

2015 - The FH already has over 6,000 graduates. The newly founded alumni FH Burgenland association takes off in full swing.

2019 - FH Burgenland celebrates its first doctorate, an Austrian first. The highest academic degree is awarded to the first four graduates of the international, cooperative PhD programme in International Economic Relations and Management.

2019 - In Pinkafeld, the starting signal is given for the new campus with library, refectory, research centre, laboratories and teaching rooms.

2020 - In March 2020, the Corona pandemic breaks out in Austria. Within just 24 hours, Burgenland University of Applied Sciences converts 100% of its teaching to distance learning. Thanks to a Safe-FH concept, students, lecturers and staff get through the pandemic safely.

2021 - The FH Burgenland is ranked 95th in a ranking by trend magazine, the kununu platform and Statista among the top 100 companies in Austria and is thus considered the best employer in Burgenland in 2021.

2021 - Several Austrian universities of applied sciences join forces to form the Alliance of Sustainable Universities on 7 October. The FH Burgenland also presents its first sustainability strategy.

2022 - Securing a sustainable energy supply is the focus of the Josef Ressel Centre at the Pinkafeld location of FH Burgenland, which will be officially opened on 1 February 2022. For five years, complex integrated energy systems will be analysed at the centre in order to make them more sustainable and efficient. The partners are the energy companies Burgenland Energie and Wien Energie. The centre is funded by the corporate partners and, via the Christian Doppler Research Association, by the Ministry for Digitalisation and Economic Location.

2022 - The two research buildings Lowergetikum (Pinkafeld) and Informatikum (Eisenstadt) are opened by Forschung Burgenland.

2023 - The "AIM Austrian Institute of Management GmbH", a subsidiary of FH Burgenland, is renamed "FH Burgenland Weiterbildung GmbH". The new brand consolidates the connection with the university and strengthens its positioning in academic continuing education.
