Tandem Programme

The Tandem programme at FH Burgenland brings students from different countries together with the aim of promoting intercultural language learning. It not only offers students the opportunity to improve their foreign language skills, but also to develop intercultural competence and make international friends.

The tandem programme brings together two students with different mother tongues to help each other with language learning (e.g. an Austrian student helps a Croatian student to learn German, the Croatian student helps the Austrian student to learn Croatian). In tandem learning, languages are learnt and practised outside the classroom in a relaxed atmosphere.

The tandem programme is aimed at students from the following 10 universities: Aix-Marseille Université, University of Applied Sciences Burgenland, Joseph Haydn Conservatory, King's College London, Laurea University of Applied Sciences, University of Teacher Education Burgenland, Sveučilište u Zadru, Universidad de Salamanca, University of Aberdeen and Univerza v Mariboru.

Registration for the winter semester 2023/24 is possible online(forms.office.com/r/bk8f5VTJfc) and runs until Tuesday, 3 October 2023. Registration at a later date is unfortunately not possible.

1) Kick-off event on Wednesday, 04 October 2023 at 19:00 (online via Teams)

At the kick-off event, all students who have been accepted into the Tandem programme will meet for the first time. The participants get to know their tandem partner and receive detailed information about the programme as well as tips for organising the individual meetings.

2) Individual meetings

From the kick-off event to the final event, each tandem pair organises at least 6 individual meetings lasting around 90 minutes (45 minutes per language). Each tandem pair decides for themselves when and where these individual meetings take place.

3) Stopover on Monday, 27 November 2023 at 19:00 (online via Teams)

At the so-called stopover, all tandem pairs report on their first meetings. Difficulties and challenges faced by the participants will be discussed.

4) Final event on Monday, 15 January 2024 at 19:00 (online via Teams)

At the end of the semester, there will be a closing event at which all tandem pairs will officially meet for the last time and talk about and reflect on their time together.

We do our best to find a tandem partner for everyone who is interested. Unfortunately, this is not always possible because it depends on how many applications we receive for each language.
