Bernadette Chmelar from Eisenstadt (Burgenland) works as a financial risk expert at the European Central Bank (ECB) in Frankfurt. She took special interest in finance – financial risk management to be accurate – during her studies in International Business Relations at the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland. The young expert describes her work field as very interesting, challenging and highly complex. Every day at work feels different for her.
After five years working for the Austrian National Bank she was seconded to work for the risk management function of the ECB for a period of three years. After that she started her first management position in financial risk consulting at Price Waterhouse Cooper where she gained experience in coordinating junior staff and projects, however, only for a limited period of time. Currently, she is working again as financial risk expert at the ECB. She is mainly responsible for analysing and reporting on Eurosystem risks and profitability issues. Currently she is contributing to the stress testing exercise of the European Banking sector. She also likes mentoring younger colleagues. „I am part of a highly international and inspiring team, mainly working on quantitative and qualitative assessment of financial risks related to monetary policy operations”, she tells us.
Both her bachelor’s and her master’s degree in International Business Relations at UAS Burgenland helped building an important foundation for her career. However, also post-graduate education such as the CFA programme was very helpful. She likes to look back at her time as a student, which she spent partly abroad. Her piece of advice to students: “Never stop learning and studying and set yourself manageable career goals which you can achieve and aim for step by step.”
