Scientific and technological advances are essential to addressing energy challenges of the future, in which global energy needs will more than double by 2050. This summer school will provide an overview of renewable energy sources used in construction and building retrofitting and sustainable technologies.
The summer school is a 10-day residential programme organized by the Department of Energy and Environmental Management of the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland (Austria) at its Pinkafeld campus.
The summer school is implemented into the curriculum for students of the UAS Burgenland, therefore attendance is required (Sept. 18-27, Saturday included). Foreign students from partner universities have to apply and register to be eligible for a CEEPUS grant to cover travel and maintenance costs. Registration is open to science, architecture and engineering students enrolled at the participating universities.
The language of the summer school is English.
Specifics on our Summer School
Topics central to the course include renewable energy resources, such as heat pumps, biomass and photovoltaics, opportunities and limitations of such renewable energy technologies, as well as energy efficiency of buildings and ecological assessment of energy systems. Course leaders and guest lecturers cover a broad spectrum of international experience. Apart from the theoretical input, the aim of the school is to offer some practical solutions, especially with the help of laboratory work and field trips.
The main emphasis of the summer school is on the elaboration of a design plan in international project teams guided by one of the invited professors whose expertise will help students from different fields and countries to find creative solutions to a concrete task. Our objective is to offer students the unique opportunity to work in internationally diverse groups in an interdisciplinary manner.
However, it is not only the acquired technical know-how but also the personal immersion into an international environment that makes the summer school decidedly an unforgettable experience. The project work will provide for the majority of the participants the first real-life chance to work on a technical design with experts and would-be experts from different disciplines, who have diverse cultural backgrounds, thus customs and working methods.

Requirements and evaluation
The Summer School includes an amount of about 60 teaching hours. Participation and fulfilment of requirements assure the completion of 4 ECTS credits. Certificates will be awarded upon completion of the school. To be qualified the following requirements are to be met:
- attendance and participation in classes, workshops and lab practices (50%)
- final group presentation (50%)
