Free German courses for international students

The course is offered online so that both full-time and part-time students from both locations can participate.

Around one sixth of the students at UAS Burgenland do not have German as their mother tongue. From October, the university will be introducing weekly support courses in German as an academic language for these students. This is intended to counteract drop-out.

Eisenstadt/Pinkafeld, 17th of September 2024: Around 17% of regular students at UAS Burgenland have a mother tongue other than German. Even if they fulfil the formal entry criteria for their degree programmes - i.e. German at least at B2 level - they face particular challenges during their studies. The university is now taking action to support this group of students and prevent them from dropping out. Students on Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences can register for a free "German as a foreign language during studies" course. The response has exceeded the expectations of those responsible.

Online course for German as a foreign language

We have thought about launching this programme for some time, and we also know from international research that students with a different mother tongue need special support to succeed in their studies, but we didn't expect such a huge response.

Within a few days, around 50 students from a wide range of degree programmes have registered. The number may increase before the course starts at the beginning of October.

Plieger, who holds a doctorate in German as a foreign language, will be teaching the online courses herself. "We will work on the general academic language and thus make it easier for students to progress in their studies." This is therefore not a specialised language course, but a general German as a foreign language course at C1 level with a special focus on the university context for students on all Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes. The course is free of charge for all regular students at UAS Burgenland and is offered online so that both full-time and part-time students at both locations can take part.

Studying at an international university

UAS Burgenland promotes internationalisation by, among other things, accepting qualified students who have not acquired German as their first language. 50 nationalities currently come together to study in Eisenstadt or Pinkafeld. The university currently offers 15 Bachelor's and 13 Master's degree programmes. More than 9,800 regular and non-degree students are currently studying in four departments, namely Energy & Environment, Health & Social Affairs, Information Technology and Business, as well as in higher education programmes for continuing academic education.
