AI workshops for journalists

In cooperation with the Austrian Media Academy, University of Applied Sciences Burgenland offers workshops for journalists. The aim is to strengthen regional journalism and promote young talents.

Eisenstadt, 7th of June 2024 - Representatives from several newspapers and local TV ORF Burgenland spent a morning in the classroom. Together with students from the media degree programmes at the Burgenland University of Applied Sciences, they learned interesting facts about the use of artificial intelligence in journalism in an exclusive "Regio Media Workshop". In the first of two interactive seminars, David Obererlacher, an experienced communications consultant, introduced them to the world of large language models such as ChatGPT. These systems are revolutionising the way content is generated and edited and offer new ways of optimising editorial tasks.

Support and expertise for regional media

The new Regio Media Workshops once again emphasise the commitment of University of Applied Sciences Burgenland to local journalism and regional media. They are the backbone of democracy and must be supported in their work to the best of their ability. In the workshops, we do just that in cooperation with our long-standing partner, the Austrian Media Academy: in small groups, journalists from media outlets such as ORF Burgenland, Burgenländische Volkszeitung (BVZ) and Bezirksblätter Burgenland as well as students of the UAS in the media sector address current topics.

Michael Roither, initiator and head of the Digital Media and Communication programme at FH Burgenland

The workshops will start with the use of artificial intelligence in everyday journalism. "A topical and explosive subject that journalists have to deal with intensively - but can also benefit from."

The seminars are organised in close cooperation between the UAS and the Austrian Media Academy. For Managing Director Nikolaus Koller, it is particularly important to create programmes in all federal states and regions of the country.

Whether in education or journalism, collaboration is the order of the day. We are delighted to be able to launch such a project here with the Regio Media series, as we value UAS Burgenland as an excellent educational institution and are proud to be one of its partners.

Nikolaus Koller, Managing Director of the Austrian Media Academy

The seminar programme is aimed at students and graduates of the Media Academy and the University of Applied Sciences. Media professionals and journalists from the region are also welcome to take part.

The topic for the second date in the series on 27 September 2024 is AI tools as writing assistants and sources of inspiration. In the autumn, expert Markus Feigl will use practical examples to explain the impact this has on media and media companies, where artificial intelligence is currently reaching its limits and which tools journalists should currently use. Anyone interested can contact Nikolaus Koller at nikolaus.koller(at)oema.at for more information on further workshops.
