Are there REALLY no tuition fees at FH Burgenland?
But first things first: Yes, you read that right. FH Burgenland is one of three universities of applied sciences in Austria (together with FH Vorarlberg and FH Joanneum) where no tuition fees have to be paid for Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes. At other universities of applied sciences, these can amount to around € 360 per semester.
What does studying cost me?
An empty fridge, pasta with pesto and high rents even when living in a shared flat: For many young people, the student years can be summarised in these terms. But even as a working student, you can use every cent to build a house, start a family or travel.
In this article, we would therefore like to briefly explain how much a Bachelor's or Master's degree programme - at FH Burgenland and in Austria in general - will cost you on average.
Three students, three life situations
Tuition fees
Here you can get off to a good start on your Bachelor's and Master's degree programme at FH Burgenland: We do not charge tuition fees in order to give everyone access to an academic education. We also do not charge tuition fees for applicants from other EU countries or third countries. Only our PhD programmes and university courses are subject to a fee. (PS: You can still apply for financial aid, even without tuition fees).
ÖH contribution
Not to be confused with tuition fees: The ÖH contribution of currently (as of August 2023) around €22.70. You have to pay this per semester (at every university) to the Austrian National Union of Students.
The fees have already been used to sponsor free period products and celebrations, such as the summer party, at our study centres.
Security deposit
In the course of the admission procedure, FH Burgenland charges a deposit of € 350. This is to guarantee your place on the programme. After the first semester, however, you will receive this deposit back as an active student.
If you do not fulfil the admission requirements at the start of your studies - e.g. if you have not passed the secondary school leaving examination - you will also get your money back. In all other cases - for example, if you drop out during the first semester - the deposit is forfeited.
Other costs that may arise
Once your studies are financially covered, there are of course other costs that you should have on your radar. However, these can vary depending on where you live, your living situation and the degree programme or university.

Books and scripts

Student trips
Additional costs may be incurred for excursions abroad, semesters abroad and internships abroad. Of course, you are always free to decide whether you want to take part in these trips. The ÖH also offers support.
Costs for car or public transport
Travel costs can vary depending on whether you have a private car or use public transport. Of course, how far you live from campus also plays a role. We have summarised everything you need to know about travel and public transport in this article.
For part-time students, it is often cheaper if you stay overnight in student accommodation from Friday to Saturday. Free parking is available at both study centres. Shortly after starting your studies, the first car pools are formed. If you would like to actively look for or offer a carpool, you can use the Green Drive app. The premium version is free for students and employees of FH Burgenland - as a student of FH Burgenland, you can find the code for registration in the Studo app or on request.
And where can I get financial support?
As a student, you are of course not completely left out in the cold: At FH Burgenland, we award several merit scholarships worth around € 750 per year. You can also deduct some costs from your taxes and benefit from student discounts. If you lack financial support from your parents, you are also entitled to a study grant. We have summarised all further information on the subject of financial support, savings and tax tips, scholarship aid, merit scholarships etc. in another article.
